Backpacking Tarp Options Guide

This guide explains tarp fabrics, tie-out hardware, configuration choices, and accessories to help you understand your options. Available selections vary by model. For differences between the Trail Duster, Trail Bird, and Trail Duster 2.0, see the Backpacking Tarp Comparison Guide.

Tarp Fabrics

Fabric selection affects tarp weight, stretch, moisture absorption, and abrasion resistance.

Fabric Characteristics
Silnylon 1.1 Lightweight silicone-coated nylon. More stretch and moisture absorption than polyester, so occasional retensioning may be needed. More abrasion resistance.
Xenon Sil 1.1 Lightweight silicone-coated polyester. Has increased UV resistance and its low stretch and moisture absorption help maintain a consistent pitch in changing conditions. Similar characteristics to Silpoly 1.1
Silpoly 1.1 Lightweight silicone-coated polyester. Has increased UV resistance and its low stretch and moisture absorption help maintain a consistent pitch in changing conditions. Similar characteristics to Xenon Sil 1.1
Silpoly 1.6 Heavier polyester fabric with low stretch and moisture absorption and greater UV resistance. Provides a more robust and durable material option.
Xenon Sil Wide Wider version of Xenon Sil 1.1 with similar UV resistance, low stretch and moisture absorption. Allows for tarps to be made with greater coverage.
Silpoly XL Wider version of Silpoly 1.1 with similar UV resistance, low stretch and moisture absorption. Allows for tarps to be made with greater coverage.

Available colors and fabric widths vary by model. Estimated tarp weights are displayed in the product configurator.

Tie-Out Hardware

Tie-out hardware connects guylines to the tarp. Options differ in adjustment method, weight, and compatible cord sizes.

Hardware Description
Loops Only Simple, lightweight attachment points. Guylines are tied directly to the loops.
Line Loc 3 Adjustable tensioner designed for approximately 2–2.5 mm cord.
Line Lock V Lightweight V-groove tensioner capable of holding cord as small as approximately 1 mm.
Line Lock Lite 10 mm Compact tensioner suited to approximately 1.5 mm cord.
Line Lock Lite 15 mm Tensioner suited to approximately 2–3 mm cord.
½″ D-Rings Attachment points for tying or connecting guylines.

Guyline compatibility: The available 2 mm orange reflective guyline is not compatible with Line Lock V or Line Lock Lite 10 mm hardware. Performance with other cord types may vary depending on diameter and construction.

Tarp Configuration

Edge Options

Option Description
Straight Edges Preserve the full tarp perimeter, allowing edges to be pitched closer to the ground for greater enclosure. They also offer more flexibility for alternative pitches.
Catenary-Cut Edges Curved edges help create a taut pitch but leave more space beneath the tarp edges when pitched low, making them less suitable for fully enclosed or unconventional setups.

The Trail Bird incorporates catenary curves into its design. Edge-style selections are available only on applicable models.

Additional Attachment Points

Option Purpose
Extra Perimeter Tie-Outs Provide additional points for securing or adjusting the tarp perimeter.
Side Panel Pull-Outs Allow tarp panels to be pulled outward, increasing usable interior space.
Ridgeline Tie-Outs Additional loops along the ridgeline seam for attaching support lines.
Bivy Attachment Points Lightweight attachment points about 12" in from the ends for suspending bivies beneath the tarp or other lightweight items.

Available attachment-point quantities and locations vary by model and are identified in the individual product options.

Accessories and Maintenance

Guylines and Stakes

Reflective Guyline: Available in 2 mm orange reflective cord and selectable lengths. Check the tie-out hardware compatibility information above.

Stake Characteristics
Aluminum Y-Stakes Three-sided design provides greater surface area for holding in the ground, particularly in softer soil. Heavier than titanium hook stakes.
Ultralight Titanium Hook Stakes Lightweight, compact stakes suited to firmer ground. Their narrow profile generally offers less holding power in loose or soft soil.

Stake quantities vary by tarp model.

Patch Kit

The optional patch kit contains a small tube of silicone caulk, matching tarp fabric, and a stir stick and application brush for repairs.

Matching fabric is normally approximately 12″ × 12″, although the size may vary with custom or specialty fabrics.

Seam Sealing

Seam sealing is included with all Simply Light Designs tarps except:

  • Simplicity Asym: Seam sealing is not needed.
  • Standard Trail Duster: Seam sealing is included only when panel pull-outs are selected, otherwise it is not needed.
