These simple starting points apply to typical gathered-end hammocks, including netted models. Your equipment, site conditions, and personal preferences may call for a different setup.

Choose a Suitable Hang Location

  • Choose two healthy, sturdy trees. Check for dead branches and other overhead hazards.
  • Keep the area below clear, use tree-friendly straps, and follow campsite regulations.

Attach the Suspension

  • Attach the suspension securely. An angle of about 30° from horizontal when occupied is a common starting point.
  • Attachment height depends on tree spacing, hammock length, and suspension type.

Check Sag and Sitting Height

  • Some sag is normal. Test-sit before getting in fully.
  • Aim for an easy sitting height—often around 18 inches (46 cm) or lower when occupied—while keeping clear of the ground.

Find a Comfortable Diagonal Lay

  • Lie slightly diagonally rather than directly along the hammock centerline.
  • Shift your shoulders and feet until you find a flatter, comfortable position.

Check the Ridgeline and Net

  • For netted hammocks, never lengthen a ridgeline beyond what the net is designed to accommodate.
  • Trail Lair: the fixed structural ridgeline must remain installed during use.
