The Trail Winder UQ uses the design of a standalone UQP as a starting point and then adds a layer of Apex Climashield synthetic insulation to make it an effective Underquilt.  I am currently trying to keep all weights in stock, but from time to time based on demand, the 7.5 and 10.0 may need to be ordered.

It is available in either Asym orientation or a symmetrical orientation.

Asym orientation is based on which way you lay in the hammock and the insulation is cut on the angle to save weight and pack space.  The Broad Width option adds 6" to the shoulder width for those with wider shoulders.

For those who do not have a dedicated lay, such as those who toss or turn during the night, changing their orientation, a full width cut provides more uniform coverage.   This will increase the weight and bulk obviously, especially as you get into the heavier weight insulations such as 7.5 or 10 oz.

Combine the Trail Winder with an Eclipse Top Quilt for a total warmth solution

Eclipse Top Quilt

Modular System - As we all know, it is hard to get one quilt for a wide range of temperatures, without some serious tweaking or compromises in comfort.  With the design of the Trail Winder, adding a 2nd layer of insulation (in the same orientation as the base layer) is now a possibility.

The additional layer is fully enclosed in a shell fabric to keep the insulation clean and debris free.  It utilizes a set of snaps that lines up with a set of snaps on the quilt itself.  (Please note that a standard Trail Winder without the modular set up, will not come with the corresponding snaps on the quilt.  There is an option in the drop down menu to add the snaps only to the quilt, so that if you want to future proof the quilt, you will not have to send it back in to get the add on)

  • Made from using Dutch's Ion fabric or the Argon (49, 67 or 90) line of materials (custom fabrics are possible as well)
  • Layer of Apex Climashield insulation sewn in at your preferred lay orientation
  • Length - From 8' to 11' lengths are available (The best lengths are 1 - 2' shorter than you hammock length. For example, for an 11' hammock, either the 9 or 10' versions work best).
  • Width - 55-57" (depends on starting width of fabric)
  • Suspension included - Adjustable shock cord loops at each end with Mini Biners.
  • Enough shock cord is included for use on a variety of length hammocks are quilt stacking situations.
  • 5' section on each side is shock corded.  Easily adjust how snug it is to your UQ or hammock
  • Includes stuff sack sized for UQ (and modular add on, if purchased)
  • Weights will vary depending on options chosen (see charts below) **
  • For reference, the shiny side would be facing up (next to the hammock), while the duller side with the DWR treatment would be towards the ground
  • The last picture in the gallery shows the approximate dimensions of the insulation.

Additional Options:

  • For storing, a separate stuff sack can be purchased for the modular piece only
  • Optional Compression Sack available (long term storage in a compression sack is not advisable.  Letting your UQ air as much as possible will extend its longevity).  Please not that quilts with an overall temp rating of 12 oz or higher will not fit in the compression sacks I stock
  • Optional oversized stuff sack made from NoSeeUm netting allows quilt to loft and breathe while in storage

Using either Argon 90 or calendered Ion Fabric, it provides resistance to wind and rain as well.

*Please note that temperature ratings are from the manufacturer of Apex Climashield.  They are considered comfort ratings and from customer feedback, that has held true in most cases, but not all.  There are many factors that can affect ones' comfort level including whether one sleeps cold or hot, wind chill, humidity among other factors.  Additionally, since an underquilt only provides coverage to one side of the body, pairing it with a top quilt, blanket, or some other form of covering insulation, will maximize its full warming potential.

Note that the following charts are based on the 9' length.  Each additional foot of material adds .5 oz for Argon 90 and .6 oz for Ion.  (e.g. If you choose the 11' version in Ion, add 1.2 oz to the below charts for estimated weights).

Top quality and service

Got this Trailwinder UQ for my Dream Hammock Sparrow. I opted for the base insulation of 6.0 and an add-on of 3.5. I live in Northern Vermont and sleep outside every night year round. I am using a vintage Northface Cat's Meow down sleeping bag as my top quilt. With this combination, and the winter cover on my hammock, I am comfortable to about 15. When temps start getting to 20 or so, I add a 1/2" ensolite closed cell foam pad between my hammock layers. This get's me to where I can tolerate 10 degrees with all my clothes on. 15 degrees comfortably. I don't tend to get cold easily so maybe for others, the rating would only be down to 20 for comfort.

The quality is great and Jared's service is unparalleled. The fit is really good without a lot of fussing. Four hooks onto my hammock, and the shock cord tensioners on each side. Easy. No drafts or cold spots. Although I can let it sag more and get a bit of draft/air circulation there for the middle of summer. Easy enough to reach out of the hammock and cinch up the shock cord if you start getting cool at 3 AM.

If I had to do it again, I would get the base insulation as 6.0 or 8.0. ( I think even in summer herre, 8.0 would not be overkill)...and then get the modular add-on as also an 8.0. That should get me to close to 0.

At any rate, I advise getting the snaps installed on your base UQ when ordering, even if you are not getting the modular add-on at that time. The dual layer system offers good flexibility.

Trail Winder UQ

Very easy to set up and use, and about as warm as expected. I ordered the 20 degree fill and on a recent trip when it got down to the high 20s I was on the cool side of comfortable using the trail winder underquilt with a 20 degree sleeping bag inside the hammock. I'm sure it would keep you alive at 20 degrees, but it seems to follow the general rule of thumb that the comfortable temperature is about 10 degrees above the rating. The fit is great and I had no cold spots when using with a Hennessy hammock scout. It won't be as light or able to pack down as small as a down underquilt but for the price it is perfect for a casual backpacker like myself who appreciates the effortless and quick setup. Of course the customer service was fantastic when I had a question on what size to order, and it shipped out incredibly fast.

Temperature Rating Optimistic

First let me say, the customer service is peerless and build quality is great. The Apex Climashield is to blame here. It just cannot compete with down. After two fall trips, this UQ will get relegated to home or moderate/warm weather use - for summer bikepacking it would be ideal. With both layers attached (a claimed 20 degree rating), it was significantly less warm than my 30 degree 3/4 length down UQ, and this one carries a significant bulk and weight penalty over the down. I'd put the 20 degree version of this at 35 degrees lower end, if you sleep warm. Loft is what insulates in an UQ - warmth from your body trapped in the layers of insulation media. There just isn't enough loft in the Climashield. I love the trouble-free suspension and combined UQ protector design. I just wish it was down.

Sorry you were disappointed with how the quilt performed in regards to its temperature rating.

I strive to represent all my products as accurately as possible, using both manufacturer guidelines and user feedback. The temperature rating of the Apex Climashield is provided by the manufacturer and is identified as the 'comfort' rating. Not using that rating alone, I've also collected feedback received over the years, and the vast majority of customers consider this the case as well.

My apologies this was not the case with you.

Surpasses All Expectations!

I needed an UQ quickly as I got invited on a camping trip but it was going to be colder than the UQ I currently owned. The search for a new UQ led me to discover Simply Light Designs and I shot Jared an email with my situation, I needed an new UQ in under a week and I need it to fit a 6' 6" tall person. Jared answered me within moments and gave me all the info I needed to order my new quilt. He made it that night and I had it in my hands in just three days after talking to him! That camping trip the temps went down to 30 and my new 20 degree UQ kept me toasty. Not only was I warmer but it was so much better than my old UQ, no fiddling, no adjustment, I just threw it on and it worked! With my other UQ if I lay on my side in the fetal position, which is how I like to sleep, my knees would push the quilt open and I'd get cold drafts, not with the Trail Winder! Any which way I turned I was warm, which is extra impressive given my height. It packed down much smaller than I thought it would for an synthetic also, and despite being synthetic the 20 degree quilt was only 4 oz heavier than my 40 degree down quilt! This is definitely my forever quilt now, I'm going to get my husband one and if anything happens to either I'm buying another one. I couldn't be more happy with both Jared for helping me get the quilt quickly and the quilt itself.
